What does a web developer do?

A web developer writes the code that makes a website work: the structure, the functionality, and how it connects to databases, forms, and other systems behind the scenes.

That's different from a designer, who handles how a site looks. Most small business projects need both, which is why full-service builds usually include design and development together instead of hiring each separately.
