If your website traffic has dropped and you can’t explain why, new research points to a real cause, not just a slow month.

Google’s AI Answers Are Taking Real Visitors, Not Just Junk Clicks

Google has said that when its AI Overview feature answers a search directly, the clicks it removes are mostly low-value ones people who weren’t going to visit a site anyway. New research disputes that. A controlled study found that websites lose close to 40 percent of clicks when an AI Overview appears above their result, and the visitors who disappear are just as engaged as normal traffic, not junk.

For a small business relying on search to bring in calls or customers, this means a keyword that used to reliably send visitors can quietly stop working once Google starts answering that question directly on the results page, with no site visit required.

What This Means for Your Site

  • A drop in traffic doesn’t always mean something is broken on your end. Check whether an AI Overview now appears above your site for the searches that used to bring people in.
  • Relying on Google search alone is riskier than it used to be. Building direct ways for people to reach you, email lists, saved bookmarks, repeat visitors, matters more than it did a few years ago.
  • Content written to directly and clearly answer a real question still has value, even if fewer people click through, since it’s part of what these AI answers pull from in the first place.

If your traffic has dropped and you’re not sure why, a second set of eyes on your site’s search performance can usually tell you whether this is the cause.
